Dear Parent/Guardian

We wish to inform you of some changes to the Land Training regime operated
on Monday evenings at 18:30 at Falkirk High School.

Over recent weeks, discussions have taken place with some of the coaches to
identify what they expect Land Training to deliver in terms of improvements
to fitness etc in the swimmers who attend the Monday sessions. It has also
been identified that with the recent change of Land Training Team Leaders,
there is an opportunity to adopt a new and more professional approach to the
subject from both Trainers and Swimmers.

The coaches have confirmed that the focus of the Land Training sessions
should be on flexibility and strength and to teaching the swimmers the
basics to lay a firm foundation for when they move to more senior classes
where Land Training is a vital component of the swimmers development.
Stamina will not be a focus of Land Training as this will be primarily
learned in the pool.

With immediate effect, the following rules will be implemented in the Monday
night sessions:

To provide as much useful time as possible and avoid late entry into the
pool, attendees must attend wearing their swimsuits covered with a T-Shirt
(or similar top) and either shorts or track suit trousers (joggies). Land
Training will not be taken solely in swim suits.

No mobile phones or other electronic devices will be permitted on the
Swimmer's person during the training session. Likewise, to insure against
loss etc all such devices must be stowed safely in the Swimmers
sports/training bag and not left visible at the side of the hall. For the
duration of the session, all such devices must be on silent mode or switched
off.

Suitable training shoes for indoor games activity must be worn at all times.

In order to ensure that swimmers have the best learning opportunity, a
minimum standard of behaviour will be expected and enforced from swimmers at
all times during the session. Specifically:

All swimmers must obey instructions from trainers at all times and at the
time of asking.

There will generally be no running allowed during the Land Training
sessions. The exception to this is when swimmers are instructed to do
warm-up laps and some mobile exercises/relays. There will never be the
requirement to sprint or run at speed outside of these and this is to be
avoided to reduce the risk of fall/head injury etc. The swimmers must always
take their lead from the trainer.

Pushing/chasing etc is expressly forbidden

Swimmers are expected to consider the results of their own actions and their
impact on the safety of their fellow swimmers and smooth running of the
class at all times. The Land Training classes are now very popular and the
risk of collision is now greater than in the past.

Swimmers are only allowed to talk to the trainers and not each other when
instructions are being given on exercises etc. They are expected to give the
trainers their full attention. Cheering for team-mates during relays etc is
of course mandatory.

Should any swimmer disobey these rules, they will be given two warnings
during the session. A subsequent breach for any of the rules will result in
the swimmer being ejected from that session. Should any swimmer be ejected
three times in three months, they will be excluded from the Land Training
regime on a permanent basis.

The land training session starts at 6.30pm. No one can join once the session
has started.

A specific program is being developed that will be repeated on a weekly
basis. It will consist of exercises chosen from the District Regional
Programme (DRP) training material. Each programme will run for 4 weeks at
the end of which swimmers can suggest changes etc to their programme. The
DRP exercises are intended to improve muscle groups of benefit to swimmers
and the intention is that this helps improve long term results. To help with
the continuous improvement of the swimmers, parents will be expected to
encourage their swimmers to follow the programme at home once a week between
Wednesday and Saturday inclusive.
